Our Beliefs

Central Presbyterian Church (USA), Russellville is part of a faith tradition that was founded during the sixteenth century's Protestant Reformations. John Knox, a Scottish priest and founder of the Presbyterian Church, studied under John Calvin, a church reformer based in Geneva Switzerland. When Queen Elizabeth I of England succeeded her sister Mary Tudor on the throne, Knox returned to his homeland to begin reforming the Church of Scotland in the Calvinist's Reformed Tradition model.

As members of a daughter denomination of the Church of Scotland, CPC holds firm to the foundational beliefs of the Reformed Tradition. Christ and Christ alone is Head of the Church. We adhere to a high level of scriptural authority that views Jesus as the lens through which we appropriately interpret the Word of God (The Bible). We are saved by grace through faith and show our gratitude for election into the Body of Christ by extending God's grace in the world through word and deed. We are a church reformed, always reforming, through the Word of God. Our faith standards can be found in the Constitution of the PCUSA which is divided into two parts, "The Book of Confessions: Part One" and "The Book of Order: Part Two."

As a practical expression of our faith in the Triune God, we observe two sacraments, Holy Baptism and The Lord's Supper (Holy Communion). We are part of the Protestant Tradition that baptizes infants, and as part of the holy catholic and apostolic (universal) church we recognize all baptisms performed by other Christian traditions.
